Labadie Citizens Consider Designs for Downtown Street Enhancement
News
Labadie has received a $328,000 grant from the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, also known as the stimulus package. This money will be used to design the entire Great Streets Project. In addition, our community received a $365,000 grant to design and build a sidewalk/trail from the Labadie School to downtown Labadie and across the street to Blackberry Hills subdivision. Residents of Labadie are thrilled to see these projects funded and look forward to their completion.
Great Streets
Labadie has been
selected by East West Gateway Council of Governments to receive
planning assistance through the Great Streets grant program.
Labadie was one of 4 finalists from 39 applicants from the
St. Louis area.
According to First
District Commissioner Terry Wilson the grant will allow Labadie
to receive free planning assistance in meeting the town’s
unique needs by devising creative, community-driven solutions
to improving its historic downtown. This also will enhance
economic stability in the unincorporated community.
Les Sterman, executive
director of EWGW, said the selection team was very impressed
with the area’s history and the sensitivity given for
new buildings to respect the established character of this
small town. The team also witnessed the challenges present
in safely and attractively accommodating all forms of travel
along and within the street.
Recently, a seven
member committee made up of Labadie residents was formed to
function as the liaison between the residents of Labadie and
the East-West Gateway Council. The design process for the
downtown area should be complete by spring of '08. Once the
design is approved, it will need to be funded. The council
anticipates the downtown project will be complete in 2011.
